These days it seems no trendy Tokyo event is complete without a bedazzling but brief appearance from the two buxom beauties known as the “Kano shimai,” or Kano sisters.Whether it’s a few waves from a Jaguar X-type at a massive Tokyo launch party or stealing the limelight from visiting stars like Paul Hogan, the curvy duo are without a doubt Japan’s darlings du jour. But with their hop aboard international marketing agency IMG’s bandwagon, appearances at the Cannes Film Festival and recent interviews with foreign media, Kyoko and Mika Kano have their sights firmly set on the world stage.For the last few years, the sisters have been like heat-seeking missiles in the Japanese celebrity world — the staple of TV shows, magazines and tabloids, with the paparazzi trailing on their Gucci heels. Despite not having gone down the usual path that catapults unknowns to instant stardom in Japan, such as acting or being packaged as idol singers, the sexy siblings have instead fashioned an empire out of simply being themselves.Self-proclaimed “beauty and life consultants,” Mika and Kyoko dole out advice to women across the country on everything from health to kissing. Their books, photo albums, videos, DVDs, CDs, calendars and videos typically fly off the shelves. Books like “Loving,” “Super Beauty,” “A Taste of Honey,” “Kano Kyoko’s Heavenly Beauty,” “Kano Kyoko’s Innocent Beauty,” just to name a few, have all become best sellers at bookstores across the country and on Amazon.co.jp. In addition, the sisters regularly pop up on TV and in magazines endorsing all sorts of products for companies such as Microsoft, cosmetic maker DHC, Takara Toy Co, and Nisshin.

MORE THAN BUXOM BEAUTIES

And yet the Kanos are far more than the glamorous women in skimpy, glittering gowns we often see at gala events. They are clearly professional businesswomen and skillful marketers who spend hours each day making sure they are firmly in control of every aspect of their lives and business. They are totally unlike anything Japan’s showbiz world has ever seen and have struck a chord with Japan’s young women who send them hundreds of thousands of fan letters a year.Now the Kanos are looking to go beyond Japan’s borders, which is the main reason why they have signed on with IMG. Movies, for example, are one area they are considering. They recently had talks with “Rush Hour 2″ director Brett Ratner about making a cameo in “Rush Hour 3″ if and when it is filmed in Tokyo.Mika, a former Miss Japan, is certainly looking forward to it, having had bit parts in Japanese films. She also recently cut a CD for the theme song to the Hollywood movie “Salsa.””I used to write movie reviews for a magazine,” she says, citing the James Bond and “Godfather” films as her favorites. Plans are in the pipeline for the sisters to host their own TV show on movies in Japan in the near future….
